Ink and color on paper 71.3*45.7 cm

Wu Shixian (born Wu Qingyun; 1845-1916), who went by his zi (courtesy name) Shixian and adopted the hao (literary name) Pomo Daoren, was a native of Shangyuan (in present-day Nanjing). He resided in Shanghai for a period and made a visit to Japan. He skillfully employed Western pictorial techniques in his landscape painting, excelling in depictions of misty and rainy scenes. His freely applied ink washes are rich and expressive, giving rise to a highly original visual language. His representative works include Dense Clouds over the Sword Gate Pass(Jiange yunshen tu) and Panoramic View of Haizhou(Haizhou quanjing), a set of four hanging scrolls forming a continuous panorama.
