Wang Zhen (1867-1938), Buddhist Figure, hanging scroll

Ink and color on paper 135.3*55.2 cm

Wang Zhen (1867-1938), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Yiting and his hao (literary names) Meihua Guanzhu and Haiyun Louzhu (further self-styled as Bailong Shanren), was a native of Wuxing, Zhejiang province. In his early years, he studied under Xu Xiaocang, and later became a disciple of Wu Changshuo. His painting style evolved from the refreshing and ethereal manner of Ren Bonian to the vigorous and profound style characteristic of Wu Changshuo. His mature works masterfully harmonize the styles of both masters, appearing at once fluid and uninhibited, yet profound and vigorous.
