Wang Hui (1632-1717), also known by his zi (courtesy name) Shigu and his hao(literary names) Gengyan Sanren, Jianmen Qiaoke and Qinghui Laoren, was a native of Changshu, Jiangsu province. Born into a family of literati painters and calligraphers, he became a disciple of Wang Jian and Wang Shimin, through whom he received instruction in the style of the Two Wangs. By his forties, his technical brilliance earned him the title “Foremost Painter in the Realm.”His representative works include Autumn Mountains and Thatched Cottage (Qiushan caotang tu), which exemplifies his refined brushwork and rich ink tones.
